It is found in the rain forests of West & central Africa, Sapele is much harder than American or African Mahogany its working qualities are it works fairly well, however the interlock grain can sometimes be troublesome. The material is excellent when varnished or lacquered. Heartwood is a golden to dry reddish brown colour, heartwood ranges from moderately durable to very durable. Sapele is commonly exported & important African wood species. It has been used as a substitute to African mahogany.
